Imagine feeling full of energy, being your ideal healthy weight and having the power to choose actions that help you to keep you at your healthy weight, shape and size.
Imagine having confidence because you no longer struggle with all the negative emotions that come with food and your shape.
Imagine having the ability to face daily challenges without using food as a cure all.
Anthropologically, nature wants you to keep returning to sweet foods and binge on them. Each time we eat that sweet food our brain releases feel- good hormones, like dopamine.
Our primitive brain is scared of hunger. When you start to diet and restrict calories or ban certain foods in an effort to lose weight, our primitive brain thinks you are going to starve and there’s food scarcity and will hang onto the fats and slow your metabolism down to store it for the hard times to come.
When we’re anxious or worried, what do we do? We go straight to the biscuit and chocolate cupboard and before we know it, the primitive brain has hijacked our brains and it thinks we’re in danger of scarce food and gobble up that entire bag of crisps, biscuits and junk food.
“ I tried every diet in the book. I tried some that weren’t in the book. I tried eating the book. It tasted better than most of the diets”
Dolly Parton
When you start to eat normally again, it stores fat for the next round of expected starvation. It makes sense. That’s why when you go back to eating how you normally do, you regain all the weight you lost and sometimes become heavier than before you began dieting. When this happens, it can affect your self-esteem and confidence, which in turn pushes you to reach for the biscuit cupboard again to get those fee- good emotions when we’re eating all that food but the guilt and feeling bad soon follows and then the cycle starts all over again.
So, what can we do to stop this from happening?
We need to get back into intellectual control so we can make a proper assessment and make better choices. We can harness the power of our minds and reset eating habits and behaviours.
According to the eating disorder charity Beat, 88% of people with eating and weightloss problems have them because they have an emotional relationship with food.
Many people use food to soothe unhappy feelings and to temporarily solve anger, loneliness and unhappiness because it temporarily switches them off from negations emotions and redirects their focus. Every thought we think is a blueprint our mind and body work to make real.
You don’t have to feel this way. Solution focused Hypnotherapy is a great way to help reframe the way you think and take small steps in the right direction to get you where you want to go.
